data, models, and learning

okay so where are what data, models, and learning and how do they relate?

data is information.

models generate data based on data and approximate the real world. they are, fundamentally, simulations.

learning is the tuning of hyperparameters of the model to better predict the data. overfitting happens when those parameters are tuned to approximate the data and not generalize to unseen data.
